If you’ve ever wanted to shoot Pin Up, Boudoir or Film Noir photography properly, with real models, real lighting and someone who actually knows what they’re doing standing next to you, this is for you.

Alt Studio runs small, hands-on photography workshops from our studio in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Whether you’ve never shot in a studio before or you’re an experienced photographer looking to add something different to your portfolio, you’ll leave having learned something real.

What actually happens on the day

From the moment you arrive it’s practical. No slideshows. No death by PowerPoint. Just you, the camera, two professional models and a studio full of lighting equipment.

Simon, Alt Studio’s founder and award winning photographer with 15 years experience, is with you throughout the day. Showing you how the lighting works, how to direct a model, how to get the shot. The kind of things you only really learn by doing.

The workshops cover three of the most distinctive styles in portrait photography. Pin Up, Boudoir and Film Noir. Each one has its own mood, its own technical demands and its own magic when you get it right.

Small groups. Proper learning.

Maximum 6 photographers per group session. That’s not a selling point, it’s a principle. Six people means everyone gets time behind the camera. Everyone gets feedback. Everyone goes home with portfolio images they’re actually proud of.

The workshops that have already run have been brilliant days. Lots of laughs, a huge amount of creativity and some genuinely stunning images coming out of the studio. That’s what happens when you put passionate photographers in a room together with great models and the freedom to experiment.

Who is it for?

Complete beginners who want to learn studio photography properly from day one. Experienced photographers who want to shoot these specific styles and learn the techniques behind them. Anyone who loves photography and wants a day that’s genuinely different.

No experience necessary for the group sessions. Just bring your camera (or use ours) and your enthusiasm.

As well as group workshops Alt Studio also offers private 1-to-1 sessions. A full day with Simon, tailored entirely around what you want to learn. No group. No distractions. Just focused, personal tuition in one of Manchester’s most distinctive photography studios.

The details

Group workshops are £350 per person with a maximum of 6 places. The studio is at 20 Swan Street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, 7 minutes walk from Victoria Station.
